November 2024 - Green Ridge State Forest, Flintstone, MD
On November 8-10, 2024 we camped and backpacked for the first time as a Troop in Green Ridge State Forest in Flintstone, MD. We arrived Friday evening and stayed in Group Site 2, which we had reserved. The shorter hike was shuttled about 1.3 miles to their start at Warrior Mountain Overlook and the longer hikers left directly from camp. The longer hikers numbered 34, which is largest group anyone could recall. Both groups were hiking by 0830. We hiked on paved and dirt roads, gated forest roads, and best of all trails. Both groups filled up with water from a cache we positioned on Wallizer road where they have been taking dirt out of the hill side. We all continued on to Site 29 which we had occupied since early Friday morning since the individual sites are not reserveable in advance.Saturdays weather was beautiful with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The overnight low was 32°F and it warmed into the high 50s. There was a statewide fire ban in place because we had very little rain in October and the beginning of November that everywhere was highly combustible so we could not have a campfire but we were allowed to cook on our backpacking stoves. Sunday's low was 35°F and overcast. We changed plans for a shorter hike and shuttle cars to a closer location.
