March 2020 - Backpacking the AT North to Camp Tuckahoe, Dillsburg, PA

Our March camping trip was a spring backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. The short hikers walked about 6.5 miles north starting at the AT Trailhead parking on RT-34 just south of Hunters Run. The long hikers started about 5 miles south on a side trail which climbed to the AT and continued north to the starting location of the short hike and continued north along the same route. Both groups camped in a primitive area of the woods near a stream on Camp Tuckahoe property. We pitched our tents in between Mountain Laurel bushes wherever there was enough room. Unfortunately we could not have a fire but we did cook meals over backpacking stoves.

It rained on Friday before we left but was mostly clear as we headed north to our campsite at Piney Mountain Ridge southeast of of Pine Grove Furnace. It was windy during the night and we had brief snow flurries without any snow accumulation. The temperature dropped to 28°F on Saturday morning and 24°F on Sunday morning. Temperatures reached into the 50s both days under bright, sunny skies.
